Just a little off the top

It's funny. Writing this journal has become an important part of my day out here. In fact, throughout the day, as things occur, in my mind I find myself scripting out how I will write about it that evening. And then, sure enough, I sit down at the end of the day and my mind is blank. All those little details and insights - gone. I had lunch - a quick breaded chicken sandwich in a very hot wardroom (chill valve broke, shutting down the a/c up forward), and I had dinner - very yummy shrimp jambolaya and fried lobster tail (really! But before you go pooh poohing the officers, be it known that the crew had the same menu last night down in the mess decks-- for all four thousand of them!!... In fact, we probably just had the leftovers.). OK, so beyond my meals today, What happened? I guess it's good that each day goes by in a blurr. A wise JO once said that if you sleep 12 hours a day, cruise is only 3 months long. While I may not be able to sleep quite that much, I can sure try.

I do remember getting a haircut this evening. Boy do I remember. OK. So the guy asks me, "how much do you want me to take off?" What he meant was "how much do you want me to leave behind?" Unfortunately, I answered the question I heard, not the question he meant: half an inch. Sooo, I have my first official boat cut. Good thing I have plenty of time to recover. Just like the pox thing… no pictures.

I just finished a late evening workout. I finally made it down to a bank of cardio gear on the "lido deck". On the starboard side, around 01-190, there is a rescue boat sponson (a place where they launch small boats). It is open to the outside and the deck surrounding the boat is filled with spin bikes, ellipticals, and two ergs. It's pretty cool, because the erg's are parallel to the centerline and are just inches from the edge of the deck, with just a couple wires on stanchions for a barrier. So you can sit on the erg which faces aft, and as you row, if you look down to the left, it looks like you are propelling the ship. Pretty motivating.

Well, off to bed. Alert again tomorrow. I think I need to start keeping notes during the day when something strikes me as bloggable. Good night from somewhere on the Pacific.

Today (here in MD) is Groundhog Day. Being on deployment is just like the movie (with Bill Murray). EVERY DAY IS THE SAME!!

Not sure if I ever told you the Ship Suit. motto when on the ship. "Eat till your tired, Sleep till your hungry."

Good luck trying to find new things. I kept my own daily log (little green book) while on my last 2 deployments, and they are pretty much the same each day. The only differences were when we had our ping-pong tournaments.

Checking the blogs is the first thing we do (after coffee) every morning. Thank you for taking us on your cruise.

I love getting to check in with you every day, too, though I have to wait for a "quiet moment" so I don't have a routine time, yet.

Someone sent me a funny e-mail today...I thought I'd share it for a laugh. I'll post it here so others can read it too:

This one is for everyone who ..

a) has kids,
b) had kids,
c) was a kid,
d) knows a kid
e) is going to have kids.

I was packing for my business trip and my three year old daughter

was having a wonderful time playing on the bed. At one point she

said, "Daddy, look at this," and stuck out two of her fingers.

Trying to keep her entertained, I reached out and stuck her tiny fingers

in my mouth and said, "Daddy's gonna eat your fingers," pretending

to eat them. Went back to packing, looked up again and my daughter

was standing on the bed staring at her fingers with a devastated

look on her face.

I said, "What's wrong, honey?"

She replied, "What happened to my booger?"
