It's almost 3:30am. I really didn't want to be up this late. I spent the last couple hours editing five essays written by one of our chiefs who works in maintenance control. She is taking a writing class through a distance learning program, working on her degree. I've offered to help proofread her papers for a while and she finally took me up on it. I found that my inner "Berman" was alive and well as I underlined overused platitudes and passive verbs. I hope my comments were constructive. She seemed to appreciate them, so it was time well spent on my part.
I had my best workout on the erg yet today. A strong 20 minutes, finishing with a good kick for several minutes. Unfortunately, my heart rate monitor battery was dead, so I don't have a "record" of the effort. After the row, I pushed through 40 minutes on the spin bike, and I refused to let up on the resistance as I have often had to do so that I could keep the cadence up. My workouts have really become an important part of my day out here. It's great to see improvements.
Sorry I've missed blogging for the last couple days. I've been pretty busy with paperwork late at night. I'm back on the night owl routine again.
OK. I guess I have to explain. Fran Berman was an infamous Literature and Writing teacher at my high school. I learned alot from her. She inspired me as a writer and helped my love of reading to mature. Janell and I both took Berman's Modern Lit and Creative Writing classes. By her influence, I actually started out at the Naval Academy as an English major. Of course, that only lasted a year before I switched to Oceanography. I just don't read fast enough to keep up with a collegiate pace.

I knew exactly what you were talking about the moment I saw your post title. I was one who did NOT survive Berman in high school. She was a great teacher, but I could not keep up and had to drop back to regular level English my senior year. Oh well. Too bad she can't see your blog :).
