Happy 4th of July. Today was just another day out here. Getting things done and landing safely back on the boat. That was around 2am for me. No fire works. No sparklers. I wish I could say that the picture above was me or that I took the picture, or that I even saw something like that today. It's just a cool picture I found courtesy of Google. This evening before I briefed, I did catch a glimpse of a couple jets shooting out some flares on a flyby. So that was our Independence Day celebration. That's the way it should be. We are here to support our troops on the ground who are working very hard in a dangerous place to establish and maintain stability in this chaotic part of the world. Our guys are overhead, helping to keep them safe. They don't get today off from the roadside bombs or the insurgent raids. So we don't get today off. But... the end is in sight. Not too much longer before we'll start moving toward home.
Yesterday marked 55 days till we get home. 75% complete. We're finally in the last quarter of cruise. In two weeks I get to see Janell at our next port visit. I just have to make sure we don't stay at the same hotel as the rest of the wardroom. I'd like some peace and quiet for a change!
Here's a picture of a group of us from a recent flight into Udairi Army Airfield, Kuwait. When we landed there, it felt like a blow drier was constantly blowing in our faces. At 1800, it was about 115 degrees. But the dinner was good and we got to visit the exchange. They also had phones from which I could call Janell and the girls. After the brief rest, we climbed back in and continued the mission.

Scott, we missed you guys today in DC (or should I say yesterday). This is the 4th year for us going, and the 3rd year we got rained on. The Delgado's and Bill Darden went with us (as well as the Kendigs of course). We had a good time. The fireworks were better this year then I have seen yet. We got home about 2310 and the neighbors were getting ready to set off some small fireworks, so we stayed up a little longer to watch those. Kind of a let down after being in DC.
Well, keep your head high. The end is in sight, but DON'T lose sight of what you are doing right now. It's not over until you touch concrete in SD. I know J is looking forward to meeting you soon.
Take care,
Rich
I'm glad to see a new post. A small care package is on its way. You may have to ration the gummy bears in the ready room if you want them to last more than two hours!
We'll count the days with you until your return.
Scott, thank you so much for being there so the rest of us can enjoy the fireworks displays here. I saw them over Lake Almanor.
I have thought and prayed a lot about you lately. Thank you for standing in the front.
With all our national faults, you and I know, there is no better place to raise a family and call home.
Be safe and proud of what you have been doing for your family, nation and Heavenly Father!
