Janell (and others) have asked what they can send in care packages. I'm pretty well stocked up at the moment with snacks and reading material and things to do, but as I still enjoy getting mail, here are some thoughts on things I would enjoy or need (in no particular order)…
UPDATED 10 JUN 07
- Computer, Flying, Humor, Running, or Triathlon magazines
- Comics (Sunday or otherwise)
- DVD's of The Office, Numb3rs, CSI, Seinfeld, Heros (never seen any), or any other shows you think I might like
- Snacks (York Patties, Thin Mints or or those chocolate/peanutbutter Girls Scout cookies) :) As the months get warmer, things that can melt (chocolate, especially) don't do so well during the transit. Thanks for sending so much good stuff so far!
- Melaleuca Access excercise drink mix (that stuff was good!)
Thanks so much for sharing this adventure with me.
If there's anything I can pick up for you in Dubai, UAE (the 5th Fleet liberty spot of choice), please let me know. I'd love to return the favor. Any middle-eastern type stuff (don't ask for examples of what such "stuff" might be -- if you know, you know more than I) can be easily found there and can be shipped back to the states.
Note. Please try not to use foam peanuts if possible. These are problematic for disposal on the ship as they can't be burned or sunk (the two most common methods of disposing of trash at sea). They must be held on board until we pull in to port, and therefore can take up alot of room. Paper packing is best. Thanks!

Thanks Scott! That will help all of us know what you could use. Don't forget, that if you mail a package to Scott, the post office requires a customs form to be filled out. No big deal, just a short form at the Post Office.
A couple of tips when sending packages:
1. You can complete the 2976-A customs form
online here. This lets you preprint your form from home!
2. If you're package is over (roughly) 4 lbs, it's best to use the postal service's Flat Rate Box which is $8.10 regardless of weight. Boxes come in small (11" x 8.5" x 5.5") or large (11.8" x 3.4" x 13.6") (same rate for both boxes) and are free at any post office. You can pay and preprint your shipping label
online here as well.
If you get the clear plastic sleeve for your Customs form from the post office, you could have your package paid for and picked up from the house - no need to catch the post office when open!
PS - Scott's mailing address is posted on his Wanderings website here.
Check with your local P.O. before scheduling pick up though. My post office will not let me have an "international" package picked up at home. Even packages to the military have to be brought in to the post office itself. :(
Thanks, Bill, for the USPS gouge! And thanks for the great care package. I'm looking forward to watching the WWII videos. Our CO is a huge WWII history buff, so I know he'll enjoy it, too.
